#037 The Wednesday question rumbles on
New off road cycling t-shirt / My first ever bicycle cartoon?
Hello, and welcome to Diagram Club #037.
This week: I’ve created a new t-shirt design, and we quibble, in some depth, about the consonants in the word ‘Wednesday’. You’ll also find out (if you scroll down far enough) what colour we’re painting the downstairs loo.
A brief note to start:
A thank you to Diagram Club Paid members, who make this newsletter possible.
For anyone thinking of upgrading to Paid, the benefits are:
A slice of additional and extra behind-the-scenes newsletter content every week.
Reuse, with no qualms, of my diagrams on social media.
Extra downloads that Paid members can print off.
But most of all, you’re enabling me to keep on drawing cartoons and writing Diagram Club newsletters.

Cycling cartoon and t-shirt of the week
This week I’m pleased to present a new ‘Off road’ design, which takes elements from the ‘Off road cycling’ cartoon I posted in Diagram Club Issue 035 [See all archives]. It is available as a t-shirt and a bag. And, by sheer coincidence (or similar), there’s free UK postage in my shop all weekend, including Monday. You’ll find everything with the cartoon emblazoned on it here: Off road - t-shirts and bags
Here’s the t-shirt. It does always amuse me to see my t-shirts worn by models like this. Yes, of course the picture’s real.
And yes, it is available as a bag, and a pink one at that:
You can see the collection (an adequately sophisticated way of describing the situation) here:
The pronunciation of Wednesday
Last week I asked you whether the word ‘Wednesday’ has a silent ‘D’, or not.
It turns out that 26% of you pronounce both D’s.
Can 26% of people be wrong? Well, yes, apparently.
But to post an alternative view, heard recently: “Most people don’t speak properly”.
What do you think? Please write in with strongly-held opinions.

Cafe news (brief)
It’s too early to say whether my hard-hitting redbush tea campaign (Diagram Club #036) will have the desired effect. Some of the staff have noted, and not hesitated to tell me, that since drawing that picture I haven’t actually ordered a single cup of redbush, but, well… I haven’t been in the cafe at a redbush kind-of time.
[Please support your local Wildlife Trust or other nature reserve. Go to an event - it’ll be fun!]
Ecclesiastical cartoon news (succinct)
Slightly off-topic, but of interest to some of you, I know: Just to say that thanks to the superb efforts of my team (yes, team) you’ll find regular church-themed cartoons appearing on Facebook and Bluesky. My additional Substack newsletter containing church-themed cartoons took a break, but is due to get going again properly before too long.
Decorating news (to the point)
We’re painting the downstairs loo. I’ve discovered it’s a lot more fiddly than painting a kitchen, owing to misc pipes and corners and suchlike. It’ll be blue, exactly the same blue as the little card that came from B and Q (as long as you hold the card at one specific angle in the light).
Colour of the week (filler), and so on
Tote bag pink (subtly different to last week’s unauthorised pink)
Well, thank you for reading - we’ve more or less reached the end of Episode #037.
This is not the end though, if you’re a Diagram Club Paid reader, at least. Paid content continues below, and this week there’s a very early cycling cartoon from my ancient archives way before I started drawing cycling cartoons, with associated commentary.
See you before too long for issue #038. Speak to you then.
Dave
