Hello Diagram Club,
Welcome to Diagram Club issue #015. It’s a Friday night, and I hope you’re enjoying doing whatever you’re doing. Almost certainly not reading your emails. But we forge ahead anyway.
Cycling cartoon of the week
How to recognise co-workers who commute by bike. A cartoon from my everyday-cycling book of diagrams ‘From A to B’, and one that hasn’t appeared online before (I don’t think). You can buy the book here. This image will be added to the website before too long but not quite yet (#vague).
Household problem of the week
Hope you like this one. I drew it during the week instead of doing my actual work.
You can find Household Problems on HouseholdProblems.com and on Instagram. If you’d like to share that’s always appreciated.
Admin announcements / Matters arising
My new additional newsletter
The Cartoon Church is my new additional Substack newsletter featuring my cartoons for Church Times and everything to do with that side of my work. The first issue (#001) is now live: Welcome - please sit where you like (but not there). You can read and subscribe here if you’d like to get absolutely all the newsletters that I send out, which I accept might be somewhat of a burden.
Shop offer news
Salesy talk: In case anyone is looking to buy any Christmas presents from my shop (The Dave Walker Shop) there’s currently £5 off any order over £70 with the code FIVEOFF from now until midnight on 10th November (GMT). Plus, all orders over £50 qualify for free UK shipping - no time limit.
I’m taking a bit of a break next week
So the next newsletter will be the week after that, all being well.
Annotated photograph of the week
It’s doubtful whether anyone really cares what I did on Tuesday, but just in case I’ve annotated it.
I realise I’ve gone from 1 annotated photo to 4, and now 9, which is a worrying escalation.
The little Newport quiz contained therein is odd, illegible and nonsensical to 99.7% of you, I accept. Lack of sleep, etc. Please ignore.
Cafe news
Half term activities
You can do the Peter Rabbit trail, the Halloween trail, or combine the two. There is an art exhibition, which was being set up this morning. I was keen to advise on the positioning of the boards while doing not that much to assist.
An actual reader approached me
One thing I didn’t tell you: a week or two back a reader of this newsletter, and not someone I know, approached me in the cafe while I was working and said hello. We had a lovely chat. J, if you’re reading, thanks so much for saying hello and all the best with [things that we talked about].
Autumn (Progress report)
I took this photo of a tree in the reserve which I’m fairly sure deposited all these yellow leaves overnight. Whilst doing so three men on bikes overtook, who probably thought me strange. Earlier in the week a girl smiled because I was taking a video of a duck, so I’m fairly used to bemusing people for my art.
As always, please support your local Wildlife Trust or equivalent. Thank you to staff and volunteers at EWT Langdon.
Letters, apologies, corrections and clarifications
Rachel writes, very reasonably, about the colour of the week (filler):
“Might I suggest including a block of said colour in future, for those of us … lacking knowledge in hex codes.”
I mean yes, you’d have thought that would be a good idea, and this is not the first time it’s been suggested. Does anyone know an easy way I can do this? Just pasting in some code, maybe? I am 1) Trying to avoid too many images, and 2) Not as technologically ept (ie more inept) than you might think.
As always I’d love to hear from you about anything. Please comment or email with questions or anything else. I always aim to reply, but it might take a while sometimes, especially this week.
Studio Playlist update
This time around you can discover the music from the studio washing up soundtrack on the Spotify Playlist. Reasons for choosing these tracks: 1. In 2020 I drew ‘From A to B’ to this and things like it; 2. From vinyl singles collection (box, garage); 3. No reason stated; 4. Holiday reminiscences, hearing on the radio.
Standard Spotify disclaimer on behalf of my music-playing friends: Please support artists in other ways, like gigs and buying music, etc. Thank you.
Colour of the week (filler)
Sage.
Well, that’s about it for now. I’m taking a break next week, so planning to be back in your inbox the week after next with issue #016.
Content for Paid subscribers continues below. This week: a time-lapse of my drawing of the Kettle Household Problems drawing, and some commentary on my (probably) unorthodox methods demonstrated therein. If you’d like to become a Paid subscriber there are buttons dotted around the place, or ask a steward.
See you soon,
Dave
